Frequently Asked Questions

Common math questions regarding markdowns and percentages.

In almost all retail locations, sales tax is legally applied after the discount is subtracted. (e.g. A 20% discount on a $100 shirt drops the taxable price to $80. You pay tax on the $80, not the $100). Our calculator mirrors this standard retail formula exactly.

To calculate a discount manually, turn the discount percentage into a decimal (e.g., 20% becomes 0.20), multiply the decimal by the original price to find your savings, and then subtract your savings from the original price.

The calculator is fully modular! Just leave the Discount (%) field blank (or at 0), type in your tax rate, and hit calculate. It will bypass the discount math and strictly append the tax markup to the original price.
