Calculator Definitions & Working Math

  • Gross vs. Net: This tool calculates your "Gross Pay"—the total money earned before regional taxes, health insurance, and 401(k) deductions are pulled by the government. Your actual "Net Pay" (the paycheck you deposit) will be lower.
  • Work Schedule Assumptions: Our algorithm relies on the US standard 40-hour workweek constraint. It calculates 52 working weeks a year, and 5 working days a week. For hourly translation, it assumes roughly 2,080 working hours a year.
  • Bi-Weekly vs Semi-Monthly: Bi-weekly pays every two weeks strictly (26 paychecks a year). This leaves 2 months a year where you receive an "extra" 3rd paycheck. Semi-monthly pays strictly twice a month, usually the 1st and 15th (24 equal paychecks a year).

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common salary and wage calculation questions.

Gross Pay is what your employer technically pays you before any legal or voluntary deductions occur. Net Pay is what you actually take home. Before you see the money, portions are pulled out by the government (Federal and State taxes, Medicare/Social Security) and optionally by you (Health Insurance premiums, 401k investments).

To calculate a standard US daily rate from an annual salary, you take your Annual Salary and divide it by 260. (There are 52 weeks in a year, and 5 standard working days in a week; 52 * 5 = 260 total potential working days).

This standard calculator utilizes a strict 40-hour parameter. If you are an hourly worker working 50 hours a week (which usually triggers time-and-a-half overtime pay), your annual take-home will be significantly higher than the standard $X * 2,080 calculation.
