Important Notes & Islamic Rulings

  • Hawl (Lunar Year): Zakat is only due if the assets have been in your possession for a complete lunar year. New assets or savings that haven't completed their Hawl may not yet be subject to Zakat.
  • Nisab Standard Matters: The Silver Nisab threshold is generally lower, meaning more people may be eligible under it. A scholar may advise on which standard is more appropriate for your situation.
  • Gold/Silver Prices: The default prices in this calculator are approximate values in PKR. Please update them with the current market rate to ensure accuracy.
  • Consult a Scholar: For complex situations involving business assets, real estate, or pensions, consulting a qualified Islamic scholar is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Zakat, Nisab, and how to fulfil your obligation correctly.

Zakat (زکات) is the third Pillar of Islam and a mandatory form of almsgiving. It requires eligible Muslims to contribute 2.5% of their total accumulated zakatable wealth annually to those in need, including the poor, debtors, and travelers. It is both an act of worship and a means of redistributing wealth within the Muslim community.

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before they become obligated to pay Zakat. It is traditionally set at the value of either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. If your net assets equal or exceed this value, you are eligible to pay Zakat.

Most Islamic scholars in Pakistan and South Asia recommend the Silver Nisab because it has a lower threshold, resulting in more Muslims being eligible and more wealth reaching those in need. The Gold Nisab results in a significantly higher threshold. You may wish to consult a local scholar for guidance specific to your situation.

There is a difference of opinion among scholars on this matter. The majority view of the Hanafi school (widely followed in Pakistan) is that Zakat is due on all gold and silver, including gold jewelry, if it meets or exceeds the Nisab. However, some other schools hold that gold in active personal use is exempt. Consult a qualified scholar for a ruling tailored to your madhab.

In general, Zakat is not due on your primary residence or personal vehicle as these are considered assets for personal use (hajat asliyya). However, if you own property purely as a rental investment, the rental income may be subject to Zakat. Business assets and stock-in-trade are zakatable.

Zakat becomes due once your wealth has been above the Nisab for a complete lunar year (Hawl). Many Muslims choose to give their Zakat during Ramadan, as the spiritual rewards are multiplied. You can also set a fixed date on the Islamic calendar annually and calculate your Zakat on that date each year.
